F

or a complete study of mental health, exploring happiness and wellbeing is essential. A Quick Dip captures the essence of cold-water immersion set against the backdrop of Galway’s Blackrock diving board.

Reflecting on the sky in the painting, Prof. Mike Hogan thought of a ceiling, a structural limit, the framing of our lives by often oppressive human orders, structures, rules – and yet how, even within these structural limitations, people can experience peace and joy because they can always reconnect with nature.

Mike learned from Sarah that the structures in the sky represent the positive physiological changes that occur when sea-swimming, the rush of endorphins and the complex hormonal and neurotransmitter changes that transform our mood in the moment.

This made him smile, as science can sometimes be perceived in negative ways as a reflection of the structural constrains (and obsession with measurement) that dominates our modern human existence.
